Metsähallitus and the City of Helsinki are restoring the seabed habitat in the Baltic Sea. Eelgrass is being planted on the seabed to create an underwater meadow, which helps prevent seabed erosion and, in turn, improves water quality. Furthermore, eelgrass meadows serve as significant carbon sinks. They produce abundant oxygen and sequester more carbon dioxide than a forest area of equivalent size, thereby helping to mitigate climate change.

Young fish, crustaceans, mussels, and many other organisms thrive within the shelter of this meadow.

In the video, Mari Savela, a researcher for the City of Helsinki, and Anna Lysenko, a diver from Metsähallitus, talk about the restoration work taking place in Hevosenkenkälahti Bay.
